The Victorian state government has confirmed a follow-on order for 25 additional X’trapolis 2.0 electric multiple-units from Alstom, according to railwaygazette.com. The contract, valued at €270m, was announced on August 4 and brings the total fleet on order to 50 trains.

The initial order for 25 units was placed in 2021. The first of those trains entered passenger service in May, with further deliveries continuing. The state government has allocated A$674m in its 2026-27 budget for additional rolling stock purchases.

The six-car X’trapolis 2.0 EMUs are part of Alstom’s Adessia commuter rail family. They were developed in partnership with the Victorian Department of Transport & Planning to replace life-expired EMUs dating from the early 1980s.

Each walk-through train can carry up to 1,225 passengers. It provides 20 dedicated wheelchair spaces, as well as areas for prams, bikes, and mixed use. The trains feature wide doorways and semi-automated ramps for accessible boarding, tactile signage, assistive hearing technologies, and an improved passenger-driver interface.

Assembly takes place at Alstom’s plants in Dandenong and Ballarat, meeting a requirement for at least 60% local content. The additional order is expected to secure hundreds of skilled manufacturing jobs in Victoria and across the broader supply chain.

The X’trapolis 2.0 fleet will support the continued modernisation of Melbourne’s suburban network, offering higher capacity and improved accessibility for passengers.
